PSL 2023: Multan Sultans beats Peshawar Zalmi by 56 runs in match 5 at the Multan Cricket Stadium on Feb 17, 2023. Peshawar Zalmi won the toss and decided to bowl first and let Multan Sultans do the batting. Additionally, Multan Sultans’ performance was remarkably well as they won their second match of PSL 2023. Multan Sultans already had already won a match impressively against Quetta Gladiators.

However, it was the first encounter of both teams against each other in PSL 2023. Babar Azam did not perform very well in this match as he played against Karachi Kings. Apart from that, Peshawar Zalmi tried to chase a massive target of 211 runs. But Multani pacers forbade them from doing so as the team went all out at 154 runs from 18.5 overs.

However, Mohammad Haris and Saim Ayub batted really well. Especially Saim Ayub who started hitting the Multan Sultans’ right off the first ball he faced. Saim Ayub won the title of “Energetic Batter of the Match” today with a prize of PKR 200,000.

From the side of the winning team, Rilee Russouw took the title of “Player of the Match” for his amazing batting. His inning ended beautifully with 75 runs from 35 balls with a strike rate greater than 200. He also took a wonderful catch of Khurram Shehzad for which he was also the “Catcher of the Match”. Additionally, Ihsanullah got the title of “Moment of the Match” when he beautifully dismissed Babar Azam.

Batting: The stats of Multan Sultans in this match went off the charts in batting as well as in bowling. It’s the seventh time that Multan Sultans gave a target of greater than 200 in the Pakistan Super League. The match started quite nicely as Mohammad Rizwan started to hit boundaries.

Except for the slow batting of Shan Masood, the start was not satisfactory. After his dismissal, things went touching the sky for Multan Sultans as Rilee Russouw took charge. Russouw thrashed Peshawar Zalmi bowlers and scored 75 runs off 36 balls which is quite impressive.

In addition, the skipper of Multan Sultans Mohammad Rizwan also played an impressive inning of 66 runs from 42 balls. Afterward, David Miller carried the pace of the game and made 23 runs from 14 balls being not out at the end.

Similarly, the big man, Kieron Pollard also went blazing on the Peshawar Zalmi bowlers in the last two overs of Multan Sultans’ batting. Miller and Pollard took the total to 210 runs at the end of 20 overs. Russouw, Rizwan, Miller, and Pollard left no chance to make the target easier for Peshawar Zalmi to win.

Bowling: Ihsanullah bowled spectacularly as he dismissed Babar Azam as his first wicket. He took three wickets in match 5 (MSvsPZ) of the PSL 8. Moreover, Ihsanullah becomes the leading wicket-taker with 10 wickets in the ongoing PSL 2023. In the same manner, Usama Mir and Abbas Afridi also bowled really well.

In addition, he could have been out earlier than that if Ihsanullah would have caught his catch. But Ihsanullah rectified his little inaccuracy himself as he took the visit of Babar. However, Babar’s debut for Peshawar Zalmi was magnificent in the last match of Peshawar Zalmi against Karachi Kings.

Spectacular Batting Performance by Mohammad Haris & Saim Ayub

On the other hand, Haris played a thrilling inning of 40 runs off 23 balls. Afterward, when Saim Ayub came to bat after Babar’s dismissal, he hit a sixer to Ihsanullah. Saim played with great intent as was obvious from his spectacular batting performance as he made 53 runs from 37.

In contrast, the middle-order batsmen except Rovman Powell did not play very well against the Multan Sultans’ pacers. Powell scored 23 runs from 12 balls but got out as Miller took his catch. Powell played in this match in place of Shakib Ul Hasan.

Tom-Kohler Cadmore also did not perform as expected. In the last match of Peshawar Zalmi against Karachi Kings, he played a magnificent inning with 92 runs from 50 balls leading them toward the win.

However, Rajapaksa has not performed yet in the two matches that happened in PSL 8. Peshawar Zalmi’s fans are waiting for him to perform as he should. Moreover, Jimmy Neesham also played decently but not like he should have according to the situation. There were no more batters left, but Neesham also got out as Shan Masood took his catch.

The tailenders including Wahab Riaz, Sufiyan Muqeem, Salman Irshad, and Khurram Shehzad were not able to do any good. They all combined scored 6 runs from 16 balls. In the end, Ihsanullah took the wickets of Khurram Shehzad and Salman Irshad. Khurram and Irshad are bowlers and do not bat well. So, when they faced Ihsanullah who’s going undefeated in this PSL, there was no chance of making big runs.

Bowling: The bowling attack of Peshawar Zalmi was not successful in controlling the target given by Multan Sultans. Zalmi only took three wickets of the Sultans including two dismissals by Salman Irshad. Additionally, Khurram Shehzad was the least economical followed by Wahab Riaz and Jimmy Neesham. Sufiyan Muqeem took one wicket from Mohammad Rizwan as well with his good pacing.

Furthermore, Babar said himself in the post-match ceremony that they need to work on their bowling attack and fielding. The fielding of Peshawar Zalmi was exposed in this match as they dropped catches. They also misfiled a lot resulting in giving extra runs to the Multan Sultans.

Meanwhile, the Multan Sultans’ batsmen were in great form and bowlers needed to control that. As a result, the target got too big to be achieved by Peshawar Zalmi and Multan Sultans beats Peshawar Zalmi by 56 runs.
